Teaching a dog to sit is a simple and useful behaviour to teach. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to teach your dog to sit:
- Choose a quiet place with minimal distractions to begin training.
- Have a small treat ready to reward your dog when they perform the desired behaviour.
- Stand in front of your dog and hold the treat in your hand, close to its nose.
- Slowly move the treat up and over your dog’s head, towards its tail. As they lift their head to follow the treat, their bottom should naturally lower into a sitting position.
- As soon as your dog’s bottom touches the ground, say the command “sit” in a clear and positive tone.
- Immediately reward your dog with the treat and praise them for sitting.
- Repeat this process several times, gradually decreasing the use of the treat as a lure and increasing the use of the “sit” command as a signal for the behaviour.
- Practice the “sit” command in different locations and with increasing levels of distractions to help your dog generalize the behaviour.
It’s important to be patient and consistent with your training and to always reward and praise your dog for performing the desired behaviour. With time and practice, your dog will learn to sit on command.
Training Your Dog
Right now at Hartwell Dog Boarding & Day Care, we are not taking on any Dog Training or Dog Behaviour clients. However, this is not a bad thing. We truly and whole-heartedly believe that the best training you can do with your dog in most cases is by yourself at home.
I would like to introduce you to a home-based training program you can use with your dog, created by one of America’s top professional dog trainers: Brain Training for Dogs.
In this superb program, you will learn how to unlock your dog’s hidden intelligence (which, they all have) and be able to train them to do far more than just sit on command!
Check it out here, it may be the best investment you ever make as a dog owner!
